Seven cycling routes starting from Szombathely have been designated in the framework of the VELOREGIO project, and seven more Austrian hiking and mountain bike routes are also available from the Vasi county seat. The quality of the routes and the signposting will be monitored by volunteer section supervisors, and cycling tourists will be able to choose from Bett & Bike accommodation in Vas County, which is certified according to German criteria and takes into account the special needs of cyclists.
The border region between Austria and Hungary: the diversity of landscapes, the natural and cultural richness of the mountains and plains, is ideal for becoming a top European cycling region - one of the main objectives of the VELOREGIO project.
Cycling routes covering the Hungarian-Austrian border area and the western region of Hungary, more precisely Vas County and the area around Szombathely, qualified guides, Bett & Bike accommodation, varied natural values with mountains, hills and many attractions: these are the attractions for cycling tourists and adventurers visiting VELOREGIO.
Cyclist-friendly services and unlimited cycling experiences
The tours suggested in the offer can be easily planned in advance, either in sections or as a star tour, starting from Szombathely. The border region is rich in thermal spas, and there are also a number of restaurants, taverns and pastry shops along the routes. The VELOREGIO also offers adventure parks, museums and exhibitions, castles, arboretums, but you can also combine a ride with a pleasant fishing trip, white-water rafting or even horse riding.
Freely variable cycling tours
During the preparations, the experts assessed the cycling routes of Vas County, which included the quality of the roads, the provision of appropriate signs, the mapping of cycling accommodation, the sights of the area and - last but not least - the number of bike repair shops and parts shops, bike rental shops, rest stops. The routes found to be suitable have been rated by the experts consulted on the basis of a set of pre-established criteria. An important criterion in the identification was that the proposed routes should offer alternatives for both off-road and touring cyclists. The tours were grouped according to different themes. Each route is of different lengths, can of course be shortened or varied in any way. There are no compulsory stages or stages to choose from, so you can choose for yourself.
Each route is linked to a bikemap or outdooractiv link, which provides precise information on the length and difficulty of the routes. Cycling maps have also been produced.

You can also book your accommodation in advance, there are 17 bicycle-friendly accommodations in Vas County and 45 more on the Austrian side of the border. And if you don't bring your own bike, you can rent one.

For the VELOREGIO routes, a professional, internationally licensed tour guide can be hired for individual cyclists and cycling groups, and, for the first time in Hungary, for people with special needs and disabilities.
