Sé: in search of Venus in the Neolithic
Sé lies about 5 kilometres west of Szombathely, along the Arany stream. t. South of the village there was already a significant settlement in the Neolithic period 6000 years ago, fortified by a ring-shaped earthwork castle, the rich artefacts of which have been deposited in the Savaria Museum in Szombathely. The most significant piece is the small clay statue of Venus of Séi, which is unique in this region.
In Roman times, the aqueduct that supplied Savaria with water from the Kőszeg Hills to the provincial seat also passed through here. Several pieces of the pipeline have been found in the village. The remains of a Roman villa, the floor of its heating system and fragments of frescoes have been found in the mill dune. In the Doberdo dune, the lower part of a statue of a female goddess was found. Near the cemetery, the skeleton of a warrior from the early Árpád period, buried with an iron knife, was unearthed.
The present settlement was mentioned in 1404 as See. The first owners of the village were the Sey family, and in 1418 Mihály Sey's heroism earned him a title of nobility from Sigismund. The family also had a mansion in See, which was demolished in 1720.
Born in Sé, the chess grandmaster Richárd Rapport and Hungarian actress Szilvia Csonka, winner of the Domján Edit
Founding member of Weöres Sándor Theatre.

Special features:
Catholic church:
The village's old Roman Catholic church was built in 1660 in honour of the Holy Cross, but no trace of it remains today. The present church was built in 1901 in five months on its present site, on the main road to Austria. It was consecrated on 15 September, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and is considered one of the tallest and most spacious places of worship in the area. "If the church of Shei had trousers, he would be the tallest lad in the village!" - the saying was quoted with envy by the inhabitants of other villages on their way here. It was enlarged in 1933.
The church currently has two bells. The larger bell was made in Sopron in 1908 by the Sons of Frigyes Seltenhofer, Imperial and Royal Hungarian bell founders. The smaller bell bears the inscription: 'For the glory of God, in honour of St. Michael, cast by the Roman Catholic Church of Séi.
Bell feet:
The municipal website there is also a local legend about a bell. One of the bells of the old church was hidden in a nearby well by the early inhabitants to protect it from the raiding Turks. The well was buried, and this bell has been preserved in the depths of the earth ever since. In 2015, after the Easter Sunday mass, the new bell tower and bell were consecrated in the square in front of the cemetery in Sé.
