Dozmat: rainforest, lookout, reservoir

Dozmat lies 8 kilometres west of Szombathely, on a hill rising on the right bank of the Arany stream.

It is first mentioned in 1238 as Druzmoth. Traces of a Neolithic settlement have been found on its borders. The village of Bulcsú's horka entourage, the church was built in honour of St George in the 12th century. In the 13th century it was a castle manor.

In the monograph of Vas county published in 1898 "Dozmat, a Hungarian village of 50 houses and 307 inhabitants, whose inhabitants are of the Roman Catholic and Protestant faiths. Its post office and telegraph office is Torony. Its parish was already flourishing in 1600. Its landlords were the Count Nitzky and the Szluha family." Dozmat is also famous for being the place where Hungary's oldest regösén was recorded, which survived until the 20th century. Its full text can also be found on the village website:

Where a great road is created,
Beside it there is a fish pond.
I'll tell you, I'll tell you.

The little mantis will understand that too,
"And there's a wonder boy deer
I'm going to get it, I'm going to get it

If thou wouldst go out, my lord, King Stephen,
To fish, to hunt, to fowl.
But if you could find no fish, no game, no bird,
But only find the miraculous rhinoceros
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

St George's Church

The Roman Catholic church dedicated to St George, built in the 12th century, is one of the town's landmarks. The church was in poor condition, with its tower close to falling down, according to the 1674 church visitation report. In 1690 the church burnt down, its tower collapsed, and rebuilding was under way in 1697. The Roman Catholic church dedicated to St George was rebuilt in 1707 in the Baroque style. The most valuable object in the church is the altarpiece of Mary with Child, a statue from the 14th century, painted by István Dorfmeister.

Krisztina View

For those who want to explore Dozmat, the first stop is the Christina Lookout. This is the most famous attraction in the village and is very popular with visitors. It is located on the hill above the village and can be reached on foot from the playground at the beginning of the village. The lookout is distinctive and creative, its shape most reminiscent of an imperial pacer whose hind legs were shot off by the rebels. The stairs inside it provide a comfortable walk up to the small terrace at the top. From here, the panorama opens up, with the Hungarian-Austrian border and the gentle, friendly, human-scale lines of the Kőszeg Hills in particular.
