Szombathely, the county seat of Vasa, was built on the territory of ancient Savaria, making it the oldest inhabited city in Hungary. There are many places where you can see Roman monuments, and the people here keep the historical traditions alive with a special event, the Savaria Carnival, held at the end of the summer.
The street layout of the city centre itself is reminiscent of the Roman and medieval past. The County House and the Bishop's Palace on Berzsenyi Square were built in the 18th century, when the town was developing. The expanding town absorbed the surrounding smaller villages, so Olad, Szentmárton, Szőlős, Zarkaháza, Bádonfa, Hermán, Szentkirály became part of Szombathely - some of the former villages still retain their identity.

The proximity of the Iron Curtain halted Szombathely's development for a time, but since 1989 the county seat has regained momentum. Its former Teacher Training College joined ELTE, factories and plants were set up in the town, and a few years ago a new industrial park was opened, where, among other things, a world-class company producing components for electric cars built a new hall.
Tourists arriving in Szombathely can learn about the rich history of the town in several museums. Next to the Gyöngyös brook, in the area of the Csónakázótó lake, visitors can explore several parks, a beach bath, indoor swimming pool and thermal baths. There is a rich sporting and cultural offer: the city's football team with a long tradition is Haladás, currently fighting in the second division, Falco's basketball team has been champion several times and competes in international cups, and HVSE has built a team that performs well in the NB I and internationally in futsal. There is no shortage of programmes: from spring to autumn, there are plenty of events, large and small, to choose from. In addition to the Midsummer Night's Eve celebrations and the Savaria Carnival, it's worth taking a look at the "Feel Szombathely!" programme, which offers a programme for every week while the weather is good.
Nature lovers can visit the Kamon Arboretum or the Park Forest on the outskirts of the town, where hiking, running and cycling trails have been designated.
Szombathely is an excellent base for cycling tourists, which is why the routes of the Veloregio have been prepared. The central location of the town makes the surrounding tourist attractions accessible on two wheels: the medieval town of Kőszeg, the castle, arboretum and spa of Sárvár, the spa of Bükfürdő, known for its thermal waters and extensive spa complex.
