Savaria Turizmus Kft. joined the Veloregio project as a Hungarian project partner with the aim of strengthening cycling tourism in Szombathely and its surroundings - said Stefánia Grünwald, the company's managing director.
Several thematic routes have been created, starting from the Main Square in Szombathely, in front of the Tourinform Office. The cycling tours are of different lengths, some of them are in the easy category and can be done with children. One of the routes follows the Roman aqueducts all the way to the Kőszegi Hills, and at certain places (Bucsu and Rohonc) you can even see the intact canal system.
The tour towards Rum passes twenty castles and follows a well-maintained and protected cycle route. The Iron and Wine route is recommended for adults: it takes you up the Hungarian and Austrian sides of the Iron Mountains, climbing hills on more difficult terrain. The hiking trail to Kőszeg leads along the Kőszeg Hill, on a hilly and varied route.
In addition to the routes, cycling infrastructure was also improved during the project. A self-service service station, open 0-24 hours in front of the Tourinform office on Szombathely's Main Square, has been set up to carry out minor repairs. Many cycling maps have been produced and an app has been developed to promote the bikes. Almost 200 signposts have been placed along the routes, and research shows that most cyclists still use them to find their way around.
If you arrive in Szombathely without a bike and feel like touring, you can rent a bike at the Tourinform Office, which will take you around the city and its surroundings.
