The castles and fortresses, the Veloregio route from Szombathely to Sárvár was presented by László Wawrzsák, tour guide and section leader. The route follows the settlements along the Gyöngyös stream until Tanakajd and the parts of Szombathely with several castles and mansions - seven in Táplánszentkereszten.
Ikervár is one of the hubs of the low-traffic route, home to Batthyány Castle and Hungary's first hydroelectric power station on the Rába. The route is easy to follow as far as Sárvár, where cyclists will find many attractions - a special film about the city's sights can be seen on the Veloregio channel. You can spend several days in the city, even in an active way: in addition to the Sárvár Spa, you can also explore the surrounding area by bike.
There are several ways to get back to Szombathely from Sárvár: you can take the cycle path along the road 88 to the junction at Bögöt, then take a side road to Bögöt, after which you will reach Porpác. From here, a gravel road leads through the forest to Vép, and a cycle path connects the small town with Szombathely.
For the return trip, you can also take the same route as you took to Sárvár, but at Ikervár you can turn towards Rum to join another Veloregio route, the Medieval Castles and Churches tour. Once in Rum, you can choose between a longer loop in the direction of Zsennye-Püspökmolnári-Sorkifalud or return to Szombathely via Csempeszkopács, Vasszécseny, Tanakajd and Táplánszentkeresz via the cycle route along the main road 87, partly on the Szombathely-Rum railway line.
