The Veloregio project: a joint offer for cycling tourists from Austria and Hungary
VELOREGIO is the result of the development of the offer by the Tourism Destination Management (TDM) of Szombathely for cycling tourists in the Austrian-Hungarian border region between 2018 and 2020. The offer includes cycle routes and related cyclist-friendly services, as well as cultural and natural attractions.
The project VELOREGIO AT-HU 064 Development and implementation of a joint cross-border offer of the cycling regions in the Austria-Hungary border region had a duration of 3 years and was funded by the INTERREG V-A Austria-Hungary 2014-2020 programme. The total budget of the project was EUR 1,185,840, of which 85% was financed by the European Union and 10% by the Hungarian State.
Three Austrian and three Hungarian partners participated in the implementation of the project:
Lead Partner:
Regional Development Eastern Styria (A)
Other partners:
Tourism Association Oberwart Region (A)
Vienna Alps (A)
Savaria Tourismus Nonprofit GesmbH. - Szombathely (H)
Vas County (H)
City of Kőszeg (H)
Veloregio is not the first Austro-Hungarian cycling tourism project, as the Tourist Association of Oberwart, the municipality of Narda and Savaria Tourism have already successfully completed one. The current project is a continuation and extension of the previous project, both in terms of territory and technical content.
What is special about the new cooperation is the size of the project area, which required a lot of joint commitment from all partners and the application of a regional approach. By the end of 2020, cross-border routes have been designed, a common and uniform quality assurance system has been put in place and joint courses for cycle guides have been organised.
Cycle tourism the fastest growing travel segment. It combines the desire for sporting activity with the discovery of the region's natural and cultural heritage in a unique way. Renowned experts consider the border region between Austria and Hungary to have the ideal characteristics for a top European cycling region, thanks to its diversity of landscapes between mountains and plains and its richness in landscape and culture. The development of cycle tourism requires even more intensive cross-border cooperation and the professionalisation of all players in the distribution chain. The VELOREGIO project provides the region with the framework for this.
