The VELOREGIO project: a joint cycling offer in Hungary and Austria

Thanks to the tourism development carried out by the Tourism Destination Management (TDM) organization in Szombathely between 2018 and 2020, VELOREGIO was founded. VELOREGIO offers cycling routes with related bicycle-friendly services as well as cultural and natural attractions for cycling tourists visiting the Austrian-Hungarian border region.

The project VELOREGIO AT-HU064 “Development and Implementation of Common Cross-Border Offer in the Cycling Regions of the Austrian-Hungarian Border Region” has been awarded a three-year grant under the 2014-2020 INTERREG V-A Austria-Hungary program. The total value of the development is EUR 1,185,840, 85% of which is financed by the European Union and 10% by the Hungarian State.

Three Austrian and three Hungarian organizations are involved in the implementation of these developments:

Lead partner:

Regionalentwicklung Oststeiermark GmbH (A)

Other partners:

Tourismusverband Region Oberwart (Tourist Association Region Oberwart) (A)

Wiener Alpen (Vienna Alps) (A)

Savaria Turizmus Nonprofit Kft. (Tourist Association Savaria), Szombathely (H)

The Municipality of Vas County (H)

The Municipality of Kőszeg (H)

This is not the first joint Austrian-Hungarian cycling tourism project as the Tourist Association Region Oberwart, the municipality of Narda and the Tourist Association Savaria have already successfully completed a cycling development project. The current project is a continuation and extension of the completed development program, both in terms of space and professional content.

A special feature of this new cooperation is the territorial scale of the project, which required all partners to cooperate with each other as well as a regional approach from both the Hungarian and Austrian actors. Cross-border routes offer an introduction to a common and uniform quality assurance system in addition to joint training courses for cycling tour guides that were implemented by the end of the year 2020.

Cycling tourism is the fastest growing sector of tourism as it combines the desire to be sporty with the opportunity to discover the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region. The special regional topography, ranging from mountains to plains, as well as the natural and cultural wealth of the Austrian-Hungarian border region are ideal for the emergence of a top cycling region in Europe. In order for cycling tourism to develop, the intensity of cross-border cooperation must increase and all actors in the supply chain be professionalized. The VELOREGIO project provides the region with all the necessary conditions to achieve this.
